Zithromax with generic name azythromycina is an antibiotic under a group called macrolides. Zithromax works by killing or preventing the growth of bacteria, this is a protein synthesis inhibitor. Its action is bacteriostatic but could also be bactericidal in high concentration. They do this by acting in two ways. They inhibit the protein synthesis by preventing peptidyltransferase to attach the peptidyl from the tRNA to the next amino acid. They also cause premature dissociation of the peptidyl and RNA in the ribosome by binding to the 50S subunit of the bacterial ribosome.

Side effects of this medication include diarrhea, nausea, stomach discomfort and headache but these are only mild and can be relieved with rest. However, if bloody diarrhea occurs, the doctor should be alerted immediately.
Zithromax may cause skin sensitivity therefore patients may be more prone to sunburn.
